1. Not all hire cars you book at an airport will actually be 'on airport'! Yes, it does sound crazy but it's not when you understand that 'on airport' only means that you can complete the paperwork at the airport. Most car hire desks will be in the arrivals hall or very close to it but the cars may be a shuttle bus ride away. Even where the cars are actually based on the airport, you may still need to take a shuttle bus. Airports like Miami and Orlando to name just two, are so large that even though you can complete the paperwork in the terminal, the cars are held at such a distance (while still being 'on airport') that you get to them via shuttle bus.
2. It costs the car hire companies much more to have their cars and offices 'on airport' that their airport car hire rates may be higher then those companies which are technically at the airport but whose offices and cars are held a few minutes away by shuttle bus. This is especially so at smaller airports where to compete with the 'big boys' in the industry, smaller, local car hire companies will discount their rates to get the business.
3. Check where you need to return the car, occasionally, even though you pick the car up at the airport, you will sometimes need to take it back to an off airport (though very close) depot so the car can be checked and cleaned before being put back on fleet.
4. Fuel, if you have hired a car where the fuel policy means you need to return it full, check out the nearest station to the airport, so you're not desperately searching for somewhere to fill up and running out of time. This can cost much more than filling up if you have to pay for the fuel on the return car.
5. Remember to check all the above if it's important that you have a car that is actually 'on airport' and where you don't have to take a shuttle bus. Be aware that there will always be some airports due to size (either too large or too small_ where it is impossible to get any car hire actually within sensible walking distance of the arrivals hall.
