Did you know that Marseille is famous not only for its port but also for its manufacture of soap? It has a long tradition of soap making dating from the 1600’s when production started using very basic ingredients. Close to 200 tons of soap was being manufactured by seven companies by the 1700’s the number of manufacturers had increased to around 48 and the amount being produced ahd also increased to 76,000 tons.
Savon Marseille became a byword for quality soap and was much in demand worldwide, today you can still buy soap made in Marseille, although it can be expensive it’s worth it to have the ability to wash in ‘history’ don’t you think?
Marseille has much to offer the museum lover too, with 21 of them covering all periods in history from ancient times to the present day. The Vieille Charite, itself an architectural gem houses the second most important Egyptian collection after the Louvre.
Whilst the museums provide food for the mind, Marseille also provides food for the body, perhaps one of its most famous foods being the rich fish soup called "bouillabaisse" but it has much more than fish soup to offer. How do you fancy pigs trotters? They are a delicacy in Marseille which if you want to order you need to ask for pieds et parquets.
It is evening and you look for things to do, you will find you are spoiled for choice, do you want a Café with live theatre? Or perhaps you prefer your Café to provide Jazz music? The choices however do not end there. Theatres, cinemas, pubs, Disco’s all add a little something different and to truly do justice to this ancient city, you may find you have to come back, again and again!
If you want to feed your soul then Saint Victor abbey is the place to start, built on the site of ancient worship the main alter was consecrated in 1040, however the entire abbey was rebuilt during the 13th century to conform to a more Romanesque esthetic.
It has a rich and varied history , it avoided destruction in the French revolution because it became a feed store, prison and barracks. Worship is restored in the 19th century and it made into a minor basilica in 1934.
The Old City or ‘The Pannier’ as it’s known is full of history and national heritage sites, these include the underground water tanks of Saint-Sauveur, 3rd century remnants of the Greek city that occupied the site. In 1840 they were declared a National Heritage site and are thought to be still in their original form.
