From megalithic dolmens to the glass pyramid at the Louvre in Paris, France has both history, romance and culture. Although the glass pyramid seems to leave no French native (and many visitors) unmoved it is indeed a wonder of the modern age.
Paris and in fact the whole of France has much to offer if you’re into history, and if you’ve never walked a labyrinth then Chartres Cathedral has one of the oldest for you to try. It is said to be a way to connect with your inner self, to discover things about yourself in a gentle way. Is this for you? I don’t know but certainly the cathedral itself is worth a visit.
The Cathedral itself is almost exactly as it was when it was first built and if you close your eyes and let your imagination take over, it’s easy to understand how awe-inspiring this building really was. Today we’re rather blasé about buildings, with skyscrapers as commonplace we forget just what a huge undertaking it was to build something like Chartres Cathedral in 1194.
In Paris of course you can visit not only architecture ancient and modern but also enjoy sitting at a sidewalk café whilst you watch the world go by. The difficulty in visiting France is where to start, do you want fashion? Culture? History? Fantastic food, great theatre and above all the French people combine to make La Belle France a place of many moods and infinite variety.
If you love horses then a visit to the Carmargue to see the ancient breed of horse who have lied in the harsh environment of the marshes is well worth it. These beautiful animals are always grey when full grown although they are born either black or dark brown. The grayness occurs because their skin is black and as they reach adulthood, their hair turns white, which when viewed against the black skin creates the illusion of grey hair.
The Carmargue also has bulls, which is what the horses are used for, to ride herd on the bulls. The bulls are a breed apart and are mainly sold for bullfighting, they too live in the harsh environment of the marshes on the mouth of the river Rhone.
Now of course if you are near the Rhone valley then you may want to sidetrack and try some of the local wine! Just remember that if you’re driving, drinking is not a good idea because the French police do not approve of drink driving.
Appellations for the northern Rhone are:
