Car Rental UK
Car hire UK – Some ideas on what to see.
If this is your first visit to the UK or the first time you have driven in the UK then there are some things to remember.
Speed limits: the national speed limit in the UK is 70 miles per hour and this is only on the motorways, dual carriageways can also be 70 but watch out for signs to be sure. The maximum speed limit for all other roads is 60 miles per hour and where you’re on a single carriageway (where there is no barrier between you and on-coming traffic) unless you see a sign giving a lower speed limit, then you are sure that the maximum speed is 60 mph (miles per hour).
If you’re coming from the States for the first tm, you’ll come across our many, many roundabouts. Which as you’d expect from the name is a circular junction, here priority is given to traffic coming from the right, even if you got to the junction first, any traffic that is coming from your right has priority.
There are also things called mini-roundabouts and these are basically circles painted on the road at smaller junctions, priority is still given to traffic from the right.
In the States you have the ability to turn right on a red stop light (unless it is signed otherwise) provided there is no oncoming traffic. This is not the case in the UK and you will be in dire trouble if you do not observe this rule.
We have few toll roads but we do have toll bridges and tunnels and if you’re doing a lot of driving, then planning your trip and checking the cost of these tolls is worthwhile, they can be quite expensive, the cost of the M6 toll road is about £4.50 each way for a car, more if you have a trailer you’re towing.
The UK has a lot of speed cameras, they are quite visible and are painted a bright yellow, if you’re in a rental car and get caught, the rental company will take the cost of your fine from your credit card (one of the reasons they swipe it at the start of your hire) so you cannot avoid paying the fine. Depending on the speed you were going the fine can be from £60 (sixty GBP) upwards.
